Ropeway transport consists of all modes of transport using a rope system for the support and/or handling of vehicles used for people and/or goods. It can be installed in urban areas, parks or ski resorts.

This transport system is mainly used to make it easier to move in geographical areas with large differences in height. One of the advantages is certainly the short distance travelled compared to conventional vehicles.

This system was created to facilitate transport in geographical areas with large differences in height.

Over the last few decades, thanks to winter sports, there has been a rapid evolution of the systems, so the standardisation has also dealt with this issue.

Among the harmonised standards in the sector there is EN 1709 which sets the safety requirements to be met with regard to pre-commissioning inspections and instructions for maintenance and operational inspections and checks on cableway installations designed to carry persons.

This document is applicable to the various types of cableway installations and takes into account their environment. It also includes requirements relating to accident prevention and to the protection of workers irrespective of the application of national regulations.

National regulations relating to building laws or regulations or offering protection to specific groups of persons, as well as national regulations relating to testing, acceptance testing before to starting passenger service, maintenance and operational remain unaffected.

EN 1709 does not apply to cableway installations for the transport of goods or to lifts and does not apply to cableway installations designed to transport persons that were manufactured before its publication.

EN 1709:2019 Safety requirements for cableway installations designed to transport persons - Precommissioning inspection and instructions for maintenance and operational inspection and checks replaces EN 1709:2004 and it is harmonised to Regulation (EU) 2016/424.
