Lifejackets and buoyancy aids are personal protective equipment for the protection of the person during recreational or professional activities at sea.

Lifejacket is a device that guarantees buoyancy on the back of the person wearing it even in rough waters and is also able to ensure that the person is straightened.

Buoyancy aid is a device with more limited buoyancy characteristics and no straightening capacity.

Lifejackets fall within the scope of the EN ISO 12402 family of technical standards.

Class 50 N (Newton) - ISO 12402-5 jackets belong to the "buoyancy aids" category and should only be used for recreational and sports activities performed below the coast. They can be used, for example, on canoes, kayaks, jet skis, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Class 100 N - ISO 12402-4 life-jackets are already part of the "lifejackets" category and are the minimum requirement for boats and recreational craft sailing within 6 MM from the coast.

The 150 N - ISO 12402-3 class lifejackets must be present on board of recreational craft that can navigate beyond 6 MM from the coast.

Class 275 N - ISO 12402-2 jackets are suitable for all types of use.
